Description

Excavation of area identified in evaluation. Archaeological features comprised of a large black house & associated buildings, boundary walls and numerous pits. Note - Other blackhouse remains identified in watching brief (MWE149892). A large artefact assemblage was recovered though the range of materials is limited comprising predominantly animal bone, ceramic, glass and metal artefacts. Some finds were directly associated with the structures providing insights into the use and potential date of the individual buildings but the majority of objects were recovered from a buried soil layer sealed by windblown sand which included numerous discrete marine shell dumps. The majority of the finds are not closely datable but those that are chronologically distinctive range in date from the 17th to 20th centuries.
