Description

NF73NE 39 7680 3566 NF 7680 3566 Loch a' Phuirt-ruaidh, Tobha Bheag. A natural island, heavily overgrown, was surveyed. There are several stones scattered around the island and a variety of iron stands, of unknown function, but no structure was discerned. This is the island locally known as Eilean Dubh-fraoich: a retreat for an Irish Catholic priest in the 17th century, Father Forester, who hid his vestments and other sacramental items there. Sponsors: Universities of Glasgow and Sheffield, King Alfred's College. J A Raven and M Shelley 2003 REPORT DATE: 21/02/2005 Possible mix up of island names or location; a small wooded island in this loch is called Eilean an t- Sagairt (priests island). Eilean Dubh-fraoich is the larger island directly to the south and joined by a causeway to the mainland. K.Murphy(Archaeologist CnES) 07/12/2020
