Full Description

NF77NE 6 7858 7635.

(NF 7858 7638) Teampull Mhuir (NR) (Ruins of)
OS 25"map, Inverness-shire, 1st ed., (1878) and 2nd ed., (1903)

"Valay... hath three chapels, one dedicated to St. Ulton, and another to the Virgin Mary". (The third is Teampull Orain - NF77NE 11).
M Martin 1934.

The site of St. Mary's Chapel is immediately to the south of its ancient graveyard, which has been used "within the past 8 years". The existence of traces of nave and chancel show that it could not be earlier than the 12th century.
The modern burial enclosure, over the door of which was found a cross-inscribed lintel (see NF77NE 18), "perhaps even occupies the site of St. Ultan's", suggested by Martin's account to be near St Mary's by their common relation to the Brownies Stone (NF77NE 17).
E Beveridge 1911.

Only portions of the foundations of Teampull Mhuir remain.
They seem to have represented a chancel about 9 or 10 ft square, with walling 3ft thick. A depression in the ground probably indicates the lines of a nave some 3ft wider then the chancel.
RCAHMS 1928.

The various crosses associated with Teampull huir have been recorded separately, to facilitate their presentation. (See NF77NE 18).
Visited by OS (D T) 26 November 1968.

The remains of Teampull Mhuir, as described above, except that the nave can no longer be traced, are at NF 7858 7635. The structure named on the OS 25"map as Teampull Mhuir is a modern enclosure, measuring 7.7m x 5.5m over walls 0.6m thick and 2.0m high. There is no evidence of St. Ultan's Chapel.
Visited by OS (W D J) 22 June 1965.

Three unroofed buildings, the most N of which is annotated as Teampull Mhuire (Ruins of), are depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Inverness-shire, Hebrides, North Uist etc 1881, sheet xxx) and on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1970).
