Full Description
NF77SW 13 centred 7200 7270.
Bellochban lies near the shore immediately west of Loch Hosta and consists of a range of grass-covered hillocks. The eastern half of the site produced kitchen-midden remains, shells, ashes, and pottery, while 20 yards to the W, bones were very numerous but with few sherds and shells.
In recent years several pieces of shaped bone c. 1/2ins diameter have been found, apparently used as pivots, and, also of bone, a netting shuttle, pins, a needle and whorl. A brass brooch in the form of a ribbon-bow-knot is probably of late mediaeval date. (E Beveridge 1911) Finds in the NMAS.
E Beveridge 1911; Proc Soc Antiq Scot 1912.
Bellochban is an area of grass-covered dunes centred on NF 7200 7270. The finds made by Beveridge are probably from west of the road which crosses the area as that part was open dune c. 1900. (Information from Mr H Robertson, Baleloch)
Several open stretches of sand show traces of midden material but the area is too extensive for portrayal at 1/2500
Visited by OS (J T T) 24 June 1965.
