Full Description
NF77SW 21 7487 7019.
(NF 7500 7024) An 'island-fort' once stood in Loch Vausary approached from the N. shore by a causeway c.60 yards in length.
The vegetation-covered islet now shows as a simple mound.
E Beveridge 1911; RCAHMS 1928.
No trace of any artificial features was seen on the two islands in Loch Vausary and no definite traces of causeways were found between them and the edge of the loch.
The smaller island, at NF 7500 7025, is barely 1.0m high and seems too small for the site of a dun.
The other island, at NF 7487 7019, appears to be the more likely site. Visited by OS (W D J) 17 JUne 1965.
Erskine Beveridge, 1911, North Uist: its archaeology and topography, 189 (Bibliographic reference). SWE12876.
RCAHMS, 1928, The RCAHMCS 9th Report & Inventory: Outer Hebrides, Skye and the Small Isles, 96, No. 317 (Bibliographic reference). SWE5587.
