Full Description

NF85NE 1 8539 5993.

NF 853 598 (Information from MS of A S Henshall's 'Chambered Tombs of Scotland' Vol. 2, 6). Very little remains of Barp Hacklett, a chambered cairn that it now an irregular mound 6 to 9ft high with a suggested diameter of 70ft. It has been extensively robbed for building stone (E Beveridge 1911).
There are no indications that this cairn has been chambered, though the name implies this, and it is probable. There are foundations of small huts and enclosures on and around it but the only visible features of the cairn itself are a boulder set on end, 3ft high, at the NNE edge, now incorportaed into later walling, two upright stones 19ft 6ins to the SSW of it, and another, 4ft long, set upright near the centre of the mound.
E Beveridge 1911.

The amorphous remains of Barp Hacklett, at NF 8539 5993, are as described above. The 'huts and enclosures' built on and around the cairn are shielings, and a modern cairn 0.9m high has been built on the site. The name is still known locally.
Visited by OS (N K B) 3 June 1965.
