(NF 8003 5538) Dun (NR)
OS 6"map, Inverness-shire, 2nd ed., (1903)
The remains of a dun are situated on a small island near the northern shore of Loch an Duin, in the township of Uachdar. A slightly oval ring of stones, 6ft wide, encircles the island. A causeway, 42 yards long and about 4 1/2ft wide at the top, connects the dun to the north shore. RCAHMS 1928.
About 18 yards at the north end are now (1915) on dry ground. A modern enclosure, built from the material of the dun, occupies the site. The causeway is now submerged and only the amorphous remains of it can be seen at its landward end.
Visited by OS (R D) 8 June 1965.
The dun in the loch was a s described in the NMRS, except that most of the stone causeway once spanning the loch was by now on dry land, barring approximately 10m at the southern end, where it met the (possibly artificial) island on which the remains of the dun stood. The remains were visible as a low mound of tumbled gneiss boulders. Low drystone walls, largely submerged in bog, standing to the west of the causeway, were probably ... part of the 'modern structure'.
