The armed merchant cruiser HMS OTWAY was torpedoed and sunk by German submarine UC49, whilst acting as a unit of the northern patrol. 10 people were killed. Sources; Lloyds, World War I Shipping Loses.

22 March 1919. The vessel sank at approximate position 58 54 00N, 006 28 00W.
Report by Northern Approaches Command, Stornoway, 12 March 1919.

14 May 1976. The vessel was not found during area search using simrad sonar.
Report by HMS HERALD, 11 February 1976.

23 December 1983. The site was not found during area search using echosounder and side scan in good conditions.
