The steamship EMPIRE HOMER was built in 1941. It was blown ashore onto Skertichenish Rock, off Sandray Island, Outer Hebrides, whilst on a voyage from Greenock to New York. It was owned at time of loss by the Ministry of Transport [Haldin & Phillipps].

Surveying Details

19 June 1986. The scattered wreckage of a large wreck, with gun, was dived upon at 56 52 40N, 007 30 42W, approximately. A further report to follow.
Report from a telephone call - name of caller not obtained.

10 July 1986. The wreckage of a rivetted iron armed steam vessel with two boilers was recently located by divers at 56 52 53N, 007 30 28W. The wreck is well broken up, lying close to the edge of the bay, in about 18 metres of water. There is no danger to surface navigation or anchoring.

10 August 1994. The wreck was located at 56 52 57N, 007 30 54W [world geodetic datum] and investigated by diver. It lies against the rocks on the whole of the west side of the bay. The major parts are in the quoted position. These include the engine and boiler. The largest piece of the wreck stands about 4 metres above the seabed. Underwater, the wreckage extends from the cliffs to a depth of 12 metres.
