The steamship FINGAL I was abandoned following an explosion in the cargo and later sank.

Surveying Details

27 February 1940. A dangerous wreck is reported at approximately 56 55 40N, 007 25 48W, or bearing 110 degrees from Dabh Segeir light beacon. Report by Naval Officer in Charge, Stornoway.

24 April 1957. The site is shown as a 'wreck' with a least depth of 8.2 metres at 56 55 26N, 007 26 45W on HMS COOK survey of 1956.

5 March 1985. The wreck is upright on sandy bottom, with its keel on an orientation of 000/180 degrees. The vessel is wooden, with an iron-ribbed hull collapsing outwards due to the weight of the stone cargo. The highest point is amidships and about 4 metres above the seabed.

10 August 1994. The site was located at 56 55 25N, 007 26 53W [World Geodetic Datum]. The vessel lies on an orienation of 000/180 degrees and is upright. The vessel structure is well collapsed and stands a maximum of 3 metres high at the boiler, with a general height of 1.5 metres along the decking to the bows. No scouring were observed. The vessel is approximately 150 feet (45.7 metres) long.
