The steamship HYLAS was torpedoed and sunk by German submarine.

The vesel sank 10 miles E of Butt of Lewis.

1945. The site was reported in the Western Approaches list WAGO 524 signals at position 58 38 00N, 005 47 30W. The length is 200 feet (61 metres) and the height was 18 feet (5.4 metres) on 9 May 1945.

1 August 1983. The wreck located in June 1983 at 58 38 52N, 005 46 39W. It is a sizeable ship 140 metres (459 feet) x 30 metres (98.4 feet). It stands 9.5 metres high in a general depth of 120 metres. The least depth by echosounder was 110 metres.

23 December 1983. The site was examined on 24 June 1983 at 58 38 53N, 005 46 42W, using Side scan sonar, echosounder and syledis (3 ranges (processed by h.p. 9825a computer - values not supplied). NGR co-ordinates - 180860E, 979461N. Decca (n. scottish) red e 11.60, green a 40.05, purple d 74.00).

The wreck is shown on the bottom texture tracing as having its keel orientated 120/300 degrees.
