The steamship BURNSIDE was beached, following a fire. The vessel was formerly known as SPAARNSTROOM.

Surveying Details

15 December 1982. The wreck lies heavily overgrown with weed, almost intact. The hatch covers are missing. No cargo is apparent. The upper part of the wheelhouse is missing. Part of the foc'sle and 4 davits always show at highwater. Position given as 57 35 26N, 007 09 03W. Source; BSAC Wreck Register, Vol 6.

BURNSIDE, 916 tons gross, steel, rivetted, steamer. The wreck stands 9 metres above a sand and mud bottom, 7 metres deep. She is 95% intact. The engine room has 1 metre of silt in it. The source includes sketch map of the location.

(Classified as steamship, with general cargo: former name cited as Dunmore, and date of loss as 13 March 1933). Burnside: this vessel caught fire and sank 0.5 miles SW of Lochmaddy harbour. Capt. Miller.
