Full Description

NF87NE 7 8783 7595.

(NF 8781 7597) Dun Rosail (NR) Human Remains found AD. 1872.
OS 6"map, Inverness-shire, 2nd ed., (1904)

Dun Rosail occupied the summit of a rocky hill a mile N of Oban Trumisgarry. It is now much dilapidated and little of its original plan can be seen except for a fairly circular mound. In a gully below its steep SW side are the ruins of several small buildings which may have been subsidiary annexes. A few bones and fragments of coarse pottery were found in the fort itself, and near its south base were some kitchen-midden and human remains. Also known locally as Dun Errachal.
E Beveridge 1911.

Dun Rosail, probably a dun, is as described above. Only one possible facing stone is visible on the west side. The turf-covered mound of earth and stones, 2.5m high, measures c. 12.0m diameter. Various amorphous depressions and vague traces of walling can be seen at the bottom of the knoll to the north and south. There is no further information regarding the human remains found AD. 1872.
Site surveyed at 1/2500.
Visited by OS (N K B) 21 June 1965.

Some 350 yards north-west of Clachan School, about 7 miles north-west of Lochmaddy, and 250 yards west of the road to Port nan Long, on a rocky mound at the western extremity of a slight ridge rising about 15 feet above the level of the ground to the north and 30 feet to the south, is the site of Dun Rosail. The building has almost entirely disappeared, and no measurable details can now be recognised. The OS map records human remains found in 1872.
RCAHMS 1928, visited 1914.
