Full Description

NF87NW 6 803 755

(NF 8035 7577) An underground gallery, probably leading to an earth-house similar to that at Machair Leathann (Aisled round-house: NF87NW 5), is said to have been situated in a sandhill (in cultivation when Beveridge wrote) some 300 yards to the east of the round-house and almost midway between that site and Skellor graveyard (NF87NW 1), to the NW of the
latter.
(Portion of roundhouse plotted on OS 6" map of the Hebrides, North Uist &c. Inverness-shire 1st ed., (1881) sheet No. xxx, annotated by J G Callender in 1923, following information from E Beveridge. Map now in NMRS.)
E Beveridge 1911.

This site could not be located and there is no local knowledge of it. Visited by OS (R D) 20 June 1965.

The excavations and report (completed by E Campbell) of Prof. Atkinson place the aisled round house at NF87NW 5 at NF 8011 7533. The above account locates the possible souterrain NF87NW 6 E of NF87NW 5 by approx. 270m, almost halfway between NF87NW 5 and 1 (Skellor graveyard). This location is NF 8033 7550.
