(NF 8207 7492) Toluman (NAT)
OS 6"map, Inverness-shire, 2nd ed., (1904)
Dun Toloman, an island fort, now a mound towards the W end of a marsh, formerly a loch.
Extensively robbed, it now consists of heaps of loose stones, suggesting a somewhat circular central portion with annexes E and W, the whole measuring 70 by 54ft. Interspersed are kitchen-midden remains with pottery.
Outside the main structure are traces of several small separate buildings and the island at one time evidently possessed a boundary wall near its edge. There is now no sign of a causeway which must have led to the higher ground either north or west.
E Beveridge 1911; RCAHMS 1928.
The remains of Dun Toloman are as described above. To the east are the grass-covered remains of an early 19th century oval building, measuring 16.0m x 5.6m, with walls 1.2m thick and 0.6m high, together with the amorphous remains of further buildings to the west. The boundary wall is barely visible and no trace of a kitchen-midden could be found. Resurveyed at 1/2500.
Visited by OS (R D) 18 June 1965.
