Full Description

NF88SW 1 8497 8040.

(NF 8497 8040) Cnoc a' Chaisteil on the island of Boreray, about 20 yards from its SE shore, appears to have been once occupied by a simple promontory fort. Although largely destroyed by quarrying, indistinct foundations of a wall are traceable, this being apparently 4ft thick and enclosing a roughly circular area 60ft in diameter.
E Beveridge 1911.

Visible on APs.
Visible on RAF air photographs CPE/Scot/UK. 189, 1323-4: flown 10 October 1946.

All that can be seen here are the fragmentary remains of a modern stock enclosure, c.20m in diameter, with a small shielding-type structure attached to its NE side. There is no indication of promontory fort or quarrying.
Visited by OS (W D J) 30 June 1965.

The top of the cnoc is more level than would be expected if the D-shaped walling were merely a stock enclosure. The scant remains may therefore be the degraded wall core of the wall mentioned by Beveridge. There are two structures built into the wall, on the northern and southern sides. Site visit 19.1.2000.
