Full Description
NF96SW 1 9074 6094.
(Area NF 904607) Thomas (F W L Thomas 1890) mentions the existence of an earth-house on the E side of Ben Eaval. Beveridge (E Beveridge 1911) has no information on this site unless it is a small cave on a eastern spur of Eaval overlooking Loch a' Gheadais, called Uamh mhic Cealtair. Indications of occupation have been found here.
F W L Thomas 1870; E Beveridge 1911.
No earth-house or cave was located in the area around NF 904 607, but at 9074 6094 on a spur on the NE side of Eaval there is a rectangular rock shelter slightly below ground level which is probably the 'cave' or 'earth-house' mentioned above. Measuring 2.2 x 1.5m internally, it is formed by two large boulders on the E and W sides (maximum height 1.5m), and roughly built dry-stone walls across the N and S ends. The N wall is built to the top of the W boulder and is slightly corbelled to follow the contour of the rock. The S wall is only slight and no entrance was seen. No trace of habitation was apparent. Name not known locally. Visited by OS (N K B) 13 June 1965.
