Full Description
NF98SW 12 9071 8151.
An earth-house was discovered about 1906 on a slight mound where the rocky ground at the foot of Borve Hill and the sand-dunes meet, to the W of the township of Borve. The stones were removed for building purposes. RCAHMS 1928.
This earth-house is situated at NF 9071 8151, and was re-opened in September, 1964, by Mr Fergusson. At present it is visible as a walled passage 4.0m long x 1.1m deep x 0.8m wide, within and around which there are numerous shells and animal bones. Two lintel stones still lie over the passage and several long flat stones lying alongside have obviously been removed from it. Surveyed at 1/2500.
Visited by OS (R D) 27 June 1965.
This may have been misidentified. The hollow of the passage is still visible, but the stones of its sides are verging on the megalithic. The mound is hard and lumpy underfoot, and appears to be of stones rather than archaeological deposits, and it is is edged by large stones set upright. This may possibly be a small chambered cairn.
