'The principle portion of this village consists of a row of huts nearly in a straight line and placed at short intervals from one and other. They appear to have been built with an unusual degree of skill and attention to uniformity and equallity of dementions, and are erected with sods, their outer walls being faced with dry stones.'
Name Book 1853, Book No.

A linear crofting township, comprising twenty-nine roofed, three partially roofed, one of which is annotated as a ruin and three unroofed buildings is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Island of Lewis, Ross-shire 1853, sheet 10).
Most of the present crofting township shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1974) is still laid out along the line depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map, but it has also expanded to the W and SW.
