The Object Name Book (OS) describes the manse as 'A stone building which is two stories high slated and in good repair. It belongs to the Established Church of Scotland but has not been occupied since the year 1845. It was built about twenty years ago has no out offices attached to it except a thatched one which is now in ruins'.

The manse was completed in 1829, and designed by/approved by Thomas Telford.

One partially roofed L-shaped building annotated as 'Ness Manse' and as a ruin and one unroofed building is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Island of Lewis, Ross-shire 1853, sheet 3). Two roofed buildings are shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1992).
