NB11SW 7 1398 1066 and 1391 1074

What may be two unroofed shieling-huts, approximately 100m apart, are depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Inverness-shire, Isle of Harris 1882, sheet vi) and on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1973).

Shieling 1
Shieling 1 is the most prominent of the shieling group … It is almost oval in plan with a more rectangular single room within, resting upon a natural rise. However, externally the remains of the walls measured c. 8m x 5m, whilst internally the room was not much larger than 3m by 2m, which is not very typical. Shieling walls are generally around 1m - 1.5m thick, so this large disparity in size is either due to the way in which the building has collapsed, or because an earlier, larger building is present underneath.
No entrance way or furhter features coule be mad out within the structure. The walls are of dry stone consturction using locally sourced gneiss blocks…
