Full Description

NB35NE 4 centred on 385 552

Shader comprises a pre-improvement township and a later crofting township both of which are unoccupied by the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Isle of Lewis Ross-shire 1853, sheet 5).
The township was centred around the church (NB35SW 10) by the shore with a number of buildings, structures and enclosures spread across the present crofting field-system. It comprised thirty-nine unroofed buildings and seven enclosures.
A crofting township was established along the N side of a road. It comprised seventeen buildings and four enclosures. This crofting township probably replaced the pre-improvement township. By the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1974) an extensive crofting field-system overlying the pre-improvement township is shown.
Information from RCAHMS (AKK) 10 January 1997.

SABS 60: Siadar pre-crofting settlements NB 391 554 to 379 550

This site lies imediately adjacent to the north east limit of the SABS survey area, as recorded in the NMRS/SMR. However, as can be seen from the description above, this site comprises at least two phases of settlement - one on the brow of the hill, at the location of Tobar Anndrais NB35NE 1, where ruins and enclosures are recorded on the 1st Edition map (1853), and a second to the south east of this, on the old road, where the extensive old settlement of Siadar Iorach is also recorded.

These settlement remains are seen in every croft in this densely-fenced area, and as such are far too detailed to be recorded by this survey. Despite clearance in some of the crofts, both phases of settlement can still be seen on the ground and would warrant a full topographic survey in themselves, together with the settlement around Teampall Pheadair (NB35SE10) and Lambol Burn (NB35SE31) to the south and south east. Almost all of the sites recorded in Area A above are linked to this pre-crofting/medieval landscape of settlement remains, below which there is undoubtedly earlier settlement, as reflected by midden finds from Rubha Bhlanisgaidh.
