Full Description

What may be a crofting township, comprising eleven roofed, two unroofed buildings and eight enclosures is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Island of Lewis, Ross-shire 1851, sheet 20), but it is not shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1985).
Information from RCAHMS (AKK) 26 September 1997.
Widows Row was a housing settlement that appears to have been associated with the clearing and redevelopment of Stornoway by Sir James Matherson C.1845, it was not a crofting township. This settlement may have to have been built through the agencies of the The Board of Supervision for the provision of the aged and widows. These structures are also apparent on the Admiralty Charts for Stornoway Harbour 1846.
The eastern half of this settlement is clearly visible a series of rectangualr grassy mounds alongside the grassed over linear trackway, the western half is not visible and was possibly ploughed; however is may still be extant beneath the surface.
