Full Description

The grass-covered footings of two buildings and the partly standing stone walls of a third are located in the south-west corner of the WGS area. Set parallel to one another, the structrues at Baleban are shown as roofed at the time of the first edition Ordnance Survey mapping in 1878. A series of low turf-covered banks, which are backed on to the main enclosure dyke to the west and south, form a roughly square yard to the north of the buildings. An entrance in the north side of the yard leads into the formerly cultivated fields beyond. In the north-west corner of the yard is a small rectangular enclosure, open to the south, facing structure 11a. The standing remains of a fourth building (not surveyed), built after the second edition map revision (1901), lie a few metres to the south-east and outwith the application area. Further low, grass-covered footings (also not surveyed), previously unrecorded, are evident on the old improved ground to the north-west of Baleban, again outwith the application area.
