Full Description
NB43SE 16 centred 4606 3169
A heavy anti-aircraft battery has been identified on a vertical air photograph (RAF 106G/Scot/UK 103, 4153, flown 1947), on the coastal strip some 350m NE of Holm village. Consisting of four emplacements, all with ready-use ammunition lockers, and a command position to the rear. The accommodation camp for the crew may possibly lie to the S, as there is a series of huts visible on the photograph. The emplacements and command position are depicted on the current chart copy OS 1:10000 scale map (1975).
Information from RCAHMS (DE), March 1999.
This heavy anti-aircraft battery is situated near the shore at Tolm (OS 1:2500); (Holm on OS 1:10000 map, J Guy 2002), S of Stornoway Airport. There are four gun-emplacements, command post and a few concrete hut bases. The battery is constructed of brick and concrete and it appears that it may never have been completed. No documentry evidence has yet been found for this site and it is possible that it was never armed. It is also suggested that it may have been built in the 1950s.
