Full Description

'Although there as been no opportunity to examine any of the street frontages in Stornoway, evidance of earlier, possibly medieval structures may be expected, sealed beneath the eighteenth-or nineteenth-century standing building such as 16-18 Cromwell Street, sometimes called the Town House and now functioning as Merchant's Coffee House.Possibly on the site of the earlier tolbooth, this three -storeyed building, with attic, sits in a skewed position, reminiscent,by tradition,of the tolbooth.Above the ground-floor modern facade, many nineteenth-century features indicate the quality of workmanship of that time.'(E.Dennison and R.Coleman, 1997, 61).
