Full Description

Local information identifies the site of the present late 19th C. Town Hall as the site of a manor house, probably that shown on the mid-17th C. sketch plan of the Cromwellian Fort (Dennison & Coleman 1997, 26). The site, however, is shown as empty on the 1849 1st ed. OS map, and given the extent of cellarage under the present Town Hall, it is unclear how much of any earlier structure might be expected to survive.
