Full Description

very large settlement mound and extensive surrounding deposits. Latest occupation early 20th C. Earliest occupation, possibly Bronze Age. Structural remains eroding out, along with midden, floor and fire deposits. MML 24.11.99

Middens (008) and (021)
the remains of a midden were originally recorded 15m to the east of St Taran's Chapel. The midden was found to have been severely affected by erosion. A second area of midden (021) between the schoolhouse and the cemetery was photographed.
A further midden (018) thought to have been exposed during the 2005 stormwa was surveyed and photographed. Ceramic and iron objects were recovered from the exposed profile. A possible hearth was also exposed but was unrecorded due to its location high up in the section.

DES 2000: NG 032 992 Preparation for the 'Castaway 2000' project included the refurbishment of the old schoolroom, the erection of animal pens and the digging of a soakaway. A watching brief was commissioned to ensure that these works - in the area of an extensive eroding settlement mound containing substantial structures and midden levels, and adjacent to the sites of St Taran's and St Keith's chapels and graveyards - had minimal archaeological impact.
