Full Description

14 Calanais was purchased in 1934 by the National Trust for Scotland, from Mr John Smith, who remained its curator until his death in 1937. The structure was substantially altered, involving the initial demolition of one room, and the later demolition and rebuilding of its byre, both in attempts to make the building more 'typical'. It was abandoned in a state of near dereliction in 1952, and is now ruinous. MML 30.11.99
