Full Description

Rescue excavations were carried out at the site of a burnt mound and associated structures, which lay at HWM and were undergoing tidal erosion. The site was found to have three phases of uce. Phase 1 comprised the construction of what appears to have been an elongate, oval boulder- footed building around which formed a substantial, crescentic burnt mound. Phase1 is presently dated broadly to the later Bronze Age of Early Iron Age on the basis of a small pottery assemblage. Phase 2 comprised the clearing out of the primary structure and the construction of a new cellular building of apparently Later Iron Age ( Pictish ) character. Phase 3 comprised limited reuse of the Pictish building, and is presently undated. Afull account of this site wil be published ( Armit and Braby in prep )
