Full Description

rectilinear structure, with rounded angles; oriented NE-SW, measuring 16m by 7m over double-faced boulder walls c. 1m wide and up to 1.5m high; the NE wall is revetted into a bedrock outcrop; NW wall substantially robbed; entrance 0.8m wide lies c. 1m from S. end of SW wall; interior has two chambers, the southern 7m by 5m and the northern 6m by 5m, divided by a partition foundation of fallen uprights; a wall-cupboard 0.5m wide and 0.6m high with a lintel is recessed into NE wall; a length of walling 2m long, 1m wide and 0.8m high abuts the NE wall to the W of the wall-cupboard, and appears to represent a reuse of the NW internal angle of the structure asa bothy. Traces of an earlier building of similar dimensions, are visible directly beneath these remains, on a slightly different alignment (ENE-WSW) from the later, although the two share the same SW angle; the SE and SW walls of this earlier structure can be traced, the former as the foundation of a double-faced wall and the latter as a stony terrace c. 1m wide immediately outside the SW wall of the later building. The earlier structure also appears to have been revetted into the bedrock knoll. Part of an large iron cauldron was picked up from rubble immediately outside the SE wall of the earlier building.
