Full Description

SU 9:
Running from SU 7 in a south-easterly direction down the east facing slopes of Slugach this stone built wall can be traced for 40 metres (from NF 78466 15366 to NF 78499 15347). It is constructed of orthostats and boulders and is broken only where it crosses bedrock outcropping halfway along its length. Its course cannot be traced beyond ist south-east end which lies at ca. 50 metres OD where the slopes of Slugach run in to the valley floor of South Glen Dale.
Interpretation: This wall is of a different construction to many of those seen elsewhere in area being primarily constructed of stone rather than turf. This might suggest that it was either constructed for a different purpose to the majority of the dykes recorded, or it was constructed at a different time. While its north-westerly terminus in clearly definable against the east side of SU 7 its eastern terminus cannot be clearly defined. It is possible that it originally ran on to the corner of the head dyke SU 47/ 52 at NF 78523 15332, though this could not be seen on the ground.
