Full Description
SU 10:
Abutted against the eastern corner of yard SU 8 this house survives solely as turf walls, is orientated from north-west to south-east and measures 9 x 6.2 metres. It has square ends and no discernable entrance, though considerable collapse and spreading of the walls has obscured much of the internal details of the south-east end of the structure.
Interpretation: The total lack of stone in the construction of this house suggests that it was originally constructed as a turf structure rather than with stone faces and an earth core. This might indicate that it is of earlier date, possibly medieval, a hypothesis supported by the relatively small overall dimensions. However its state of preservation may suggest to a more recent, post-medieval date, for its construction, and if so its diminutive size may indicate that its use was not as a house but rather as an ancillary structure such as a barn or drying kiln. Its proximity to house SU 5 , which had no such ancillary structures, might support this interpretation.
