Full Description

SU14:
Located on the highest point of a knoll on the valley foor of South Glen Dale this circular platform stands 1 metre high is 12.5 metres in overall diameter and has a flat top surface of 7.3 metres in diameter. It appears to be constructed of turf and stone directly on to bedrock.
Interpretation: This is one of two such features recorded during the present survey, the second, SU 26, is located 132 metres to the south-west. These features may represent structures specific to pre-crofting agriculture, possibly threshing platforms or raised vegetable gardens. However if this is the case it seems unusual that similar features are not found in all of the other bailes identified to the south. An alternative interpretation for these features may be that they relate to the use of the South Glen Dale valley prior to the medieval/ post medieval occupation represented by the bailes. If this is the case then interpretations might include the levelled remains of large poly-cellular shielings alternatively they may relate to early-prehistoric activeties in the area.
