Full Description
SU 15:
Running from north to south throughout the survey area, this track way is defined for most of its length by two drainage ditches running parallel ca 5.3 metres apart. These ditches are generally about 1.5 metres wide and up to 0.5 metres deep. This track enters the survey area on its northern edge at NF78790 15555 runs for 145 metres to the south south-west before turning at NF 78742 15430 towards the south. It then runs for 140 metres before turning towards the south-west at NF 78768 15277 and running for 160 metres to NF 78884 15153. From this point the track continues in a south south-easterly direction for a further 120 metres to NF 78948 15035 where its course becomes difficult to define. A further part of this feature was identified ca 300 metres to the south as SU 60. A small spur runs 5 metres to the east from NF 78768 15277 linking the knoll at the centre of Baile A/B to the track.
Interpretation: This trackway is marked on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey Map (1881), running from the west side of Bagh Mor (large bay) to the north. It is likely that this is the original alignment for the route way that is marked on the 1st and later edition maps running through the centre of South Glen Dale Township in a northerly direction and on th North Glen Dale on the south shore of Loch Boisdale. It is likely that the track was constructed in the post-medieval to link the two areas of settlement, both of which were served by good anchorages for sea travel. Evidence of its construction may be seen along its length in the form of small quarry pits, SU 2,3,24 and 56.
