Full Description
SU 18:
Measuring 13.2 x 5.7 metres this blackhouse is orientated from west north-west to east south-east. It survives as the basal course of inner and outer stone walls and has an apsoidal end to the west. Two, opposing entrances are located towards the west north-west ends of the north and south wall, no internal features were defined.
Interpretation: The form of this house, with its apsoidal end and opposing entrances is makerdly different to the house thought to mark the final phases of occupation in the vicinity. These later houses tend to have squared ends and a single entrance in the centre of one of their long walls. This is a pattern that was latterly transferred to the crofting phase blackhouses of the southern Outer Hebrides. The earlier, possibly medieval, date for this structure is further suggested by the fact that the remains appear to have been systematically dismantled, the stones remaining being large and difficult to move. This pattern is repeated throughout Outer Hebridean and Highland settlement of the medieval and post medieval periods and is indicative of the house being used to provide building materials for a successor, probably located in the immediate vicinity. This structure forms part of the complex of houses identified as Baile A/B.
