Full Description

SU 31:
This blackhouse is orientated from west to east and measures 13.75 x 7 metres. It is constructed of stone wall faces with an earth core, has an apsoidal west and a single entrance at the north end of its east end wall, no internal features can be discerned.
Interpretation: While the insertion of a single entrance in the end wall of a blackhouse might be taken to mark the house as being early in date in the northern Western Isles, this house exhibits all of the architectural features taken to mark the house as being later in date including the single entrance and apsoidal ends. It is likely that this entrance has been located in the end wall, an unusual location as the occupants of the house would have to walk through the byre to reach the dwelling area, because this positions the entrance at the opposite end of the structure from the prevailing westerly and south-westerly wind.
