Full Description

SU42:
Located on the south facing slopes immediately to the south of blackhouse SU 41, this turf built, stone lined drying barn is orientated from south south-east to north north-west and measures 7.75 x 4.8 metres. There are two opposing entrances located towards the southern end of the southern end of the east and west walls and internally a stone step is located towards the north of the structure that supports the bowl of kiln 1 metre in diameter. No flue could be identified within the structure.
Interpretation: This drying barn is typical of those seen in the study area with a small kiln bowl located to one side of a step being stoked by a flue possibly of wook or of orthostatic slabs. Opposing entrances though not seen in every case, provided options for getting optimum draft to the fire.
