Full Description

SU 64:
This drying barn is orientated from north-west to south-east and measures 9.2 x 5.4 metres. It is constructed of stone faces with earthen cores and has a single entrance near the south-eastern end of its north-eastern end. Internally a stone step at the buildings north-western end supports a kiln bowl 0.89 metres in diameter. A slab built flue runs along the south-western wall then curves through the step in to the kiln.
Interpretation: This drying kiln is relatively well preserved with the flue being largely intact. The structure is constructed on top of the north-east wall of blackhouse SU 65 suggesting at first glance that the two are actually of one built. Closer examination suggests that the barn was constructed after the blackhouse.
Impact Detail: This structure falls within 20 metres of the northern edge of the proposed haul road.
