Full Description

SU 76:
Orientated from north to south the remains of this house measure 11.9 x 5.75 metres. It is constructed of stone wall faces with earthen cores, surviving only as basal courses and has opposing entrances at the northern ends of the west and east walls. The whole of the northern end of the house has been destroyed by the construction of the modern road into South Glen Dale. In the interior the southern end is lined with orthostatic stones, and two 0.3 metre wide slot trenches have been excavated across the floor surface from west to east. It is unclear whether these trenches are part of an archaeological excavation.
Interpretation: This blackhouse has been systematically dismantled to provide building material for a later house, probably SU 81, in the immediate vicinity.
