Full Description

SU 89: (SU 88 is missing in the Draft Report)
Located on south-east facing slopes to the west of Bagh Mor this circular cairn measures 4 metres in diameter and stands up to 0.3 metres high. It survives as a well grassed over mound with some stones measuring up to 0.4 metres across showing. Fragments of a possible kerb may be seen around its circumference.
Interpretation: The size of this cairn and the presence of the kerb, suggests that it may be Bronze Age in date. However, while its location may support this, its presence in site of a good anchorage may also suggest that this feature could mark the site of a navigation cairn that has now largely disappeared through lack of maintenance.Such cairns are sited to allow them to be used to create site lines from the sea into bays and moorings. They tend to be twice as high as their diameter and some are still maintained today. This feature appears to be too broad for such a cairn, however only excavation could confirm its true diameter and the nature of the possible kerb.
