Full Description

SU 98:
Orientated from west to east the entrance to this feature is formed by two large embedded bed rock boulders topped by a flagstone cap. This feature faces to the west marks the start of a feature running to the east for at least 5.8 metres. This can be seen on the surface as a darker, lusher, patch of grass and slight depression up to 2.4 metres wide.
Interpretation: If this feature is the remains of a souterrain then its location is of interest as it is in the immediate proximity of the high status house SU 101. On Lewis analysis of the location such features suggests they are found in association with monastic and early Christian religious sites. As one of the interpretations for SU 101 is as an early church the presence of this souterrain helps to support this, as such sites are frequently found in association to the north on Lewis.
Impact Detail: See SU 97.
