Full Description

SU 103:
Located to the north (outside) of the head dyke SU 104, in a sheltered south-west facing valley, this small shieling or barn measures 9.75 x 8.3 metres and is orientated from south-west to north-east. It has a single entrance in its south-east wall and internally has a platform at its south end. No other internal feature can be defined.
Interpretation: The location of this feature is unusual as it lies to the north, outwith, the head dyke system. This suggests that it either marks part of a settlement predating the extant head dyke system, that it represents transhumance/ shieling site or that the advantageous nature of this site outweighed its position outwith the head dyke.
Impact Detail: This structure falls within 20 metres of the northern edge of the proposed haul road.
