Full Description
SU 108:
This stone dyke running from NF 79057 14586 in the west north-west for 68 metres to NF 79123 14578 in the east south-east is constructed with two stone faces based on orthostatic stones, with an earthen core. At its eastern end as it approaches Bagh Mor it becomes a south facing terrace up to 1 metre high faced with stones.
Interpretation: This wall is on the same alignment as dyke SU 73 and marks its continuation on the south side of the modern South Glen Dale road to the shore. However its construction suggests it is of more importance than most of the other dykes recorded in the general area. It may well form part of a coastal enclosure of ca 143000 square metres that surrounds the high status building SU 101. This would be consistent with the unusual wall construction.
Impact Detail: Given the possibility that this feature encloses a potentially high status house or early church some consideration should be given to the amenity impact up the general grouping by the haul road and stone extraction site.
