Full Description
SU 128:
This blackhouse is constructed of stone with earth core walls. It is orientated from north-west to south-east and measures 14 x 6.5 metres, has slightly apsoidas ends and a single entrance slightly to the south of the cente of the eastern wall. An ancillary structure measuring 6.7 x 3.6 metres is attached to the northern end of the western wall. This secondary building has an entrance in the centre of its west wall, an opening can also be discerned between this and the main house, 5 metres from the main buildings north end. To the north-west is a turf yard of irregular shape that measures 15.5 x 15 metres and abuts the ancillary building to the north of its entrance and the main house at its north-west corner.
Interpretation: This house and barn are unusual in this area as the two are of one build and are connected in the style of more northerly houses. The small opening between the two is likely to be a so called 'secrete entrance' into the barn and would have been located behind a box bed within the dwelling. This would probably have given access to a small room in the back of the barn where a small illicit still might have been run.
