Full Description
SU 137:
This large enclosure is orientated from west south-west to east north-east and measures 181 x 49 metres. It encloses 9036 square metres of boggy terrain designated for peat cutting, and is drained by a series of drainage ditches. The southern wall of this enclosure seems to predate the other walls and runs from NF 78813 14384 in the east to NF 78591 14283 at the west end of the enclosure. This wall is a continuation of SU 141 and is constructed of stone and turf all along its length. Unlike the other external walls in this enclosure which all have parallel drainage ditches this wall runs along the crest of a ridge to the south of the boggy area.
Interpretation: This enclosure defines an extremely boggy area which is now heavily overcut for peats. It appears to consist of an early wall to the south and a series of later walls to the west, north and east all with associated drainage ditches. All of the walls in this enclosure overlie the larger radial field system.
