Full Description

SU 146:
Measuring 5.7 x 5.5 metres this ancillary structure is orientated from south-west to north-east and is constructed of stone faced walls with earthen cores. This structure is attached to the north-western corner of blackhouse SU 147 in an unusual arrangement. It has no apparent entrance from the outside, and any entrance directly from the main house is obscured by a layer of rubble. Internally it has a small step at its south-west end within which is set the bowl of kiln measuring 1.2 metres in diameter.
Interpretation: This drying barn is highly unusual in that it is attached to the corner of the dwelling area of the blackhouse. This is an arrangement of structures seen rarely, if ever, and its significance is therefore unclear. Furthermore there appears to be no direct external entrance in to this structure leading to it having to be entered from the house SU 147.
