Full Description

SU 147:
This large blackhouse is orientated from north-west to south-east and measures 17.1 x 7.3 metres. It is constructed of stone wall faces with earthen cores and has opposing entrances at the south-eastern ends of its north-eastern and south-western walls. Its north-west end wall is square and its south-eastern end is apsoidal. Internally this structure has no visible features. Barn SU 146 is attached to the north-western corner of this house in a very unusual arrangement of structures. This relationship remains unexplained as it is obscured by a deposit of stone rubble.
Interpretation: This house is larger than the average and is similar in length and width to the 'high status' house SU 101 located to the east. It is also different from many of the surrounding houses in that it may be located on its own in an enclosure formed by dykes SU 137, 141 and 151.
