Full Description

SU 178:
The fragmentary remains of this turf built structure are orientated from west to east and measure 6.8 x 2.25 metres. Up to two thirds of this building has been destroyed by drainage and peat cutting, leaving only part of the northern and western walls. A possible entrance is located towards the eastern end of the surviving fragment of the northern wall.
Interpretation: It is likely that this structure was originally considerably larger than the extant remains. It appears to have been constructed entirely of turf and could represent the remains of a blackhouse, a Viking long house, or some industrial building. This final option might suggest a smoke house, given the sites proximity to Saltavik Bay.
