Full Description

SU 179:
Located in the south-eastern corner of the enclosure formed by dykes SU 175 and 177 this site is constructed at the neck of a low coastal promontory that runs in a east south-easterly direction into the west side of Bagh Mor. The site consists of a turf wall ca 1 metre thick that crosses the promontory closing its neck, and measuring 7 metres in length. Behind this are two visible cells constructed of stone with earthen wall cores, arranged in line from west to east, linked by an opening and each having an internal diameter of 2.2 metres. Further cells or structures may have existed on the north side of the two cells and to the east, where extensive depths of jumbled stone work were noted, however damage caused by wave action makes these remains un-interpretable.
Interpretation: This small structure may date to any period from early prehistory onwards. Tiny fragments of ceramics recovered indicate the presence of hand made pottery vessels, but these were not diagnostic in form. Uses range from habitational to industrial, and only additional evaluation may help to provide more conclusive answers.
